2010 Arabic Spelling Bee !
April 8, 2010

One corner stone in the Arabic program was established in the 1999-2000 school year and that was the Arabic Spelling Bee. The Arabic Spelling Bee started by the effort of our teachers who initiated the Spelling Bee competition by creating a list of words suitable for each level and developed the criteria for judging and scoring. The elementary division has more levels to complete in, opening the door for more students to participate. The first, second and third grades have their list of words, while the fourth and fifth grades share one list. The words in elementary division came from their respective books. The Junior and High School words came from the Holy Quran. High Honor Roll Breakfast
April 7, 2010

This year, the Universal School Student Council created a new way to recognize our students for their academic accomplishments through out the school year. Today, the "High Honor Roll Breakfast" took place in the North Cafeteria, where the students who had received a 3.75 or higher GPA in their first semester, received the "Principal's High Honor Roll" button and had a wonderful breakfast with the School's Principal.

Mrs. Abdallah, the School's Principal, was pleased with today's event and believe that students who work that hard, needs to be recognized to motivate them and encorage them to continue. Mrs. Abdallah believes that the High Honor Roll Breakfast should continue as part of Universal School's Annual Tradition.

Congratulations to all the students who received such a memorable recognition!

D.A.R.E. Program Graduation
April 6, 2010

Did you know that the 6th graders graduated on Wednesday, April 6 th , 2010?! Even though the year is not over, our 6th grade class from Universal School were part of the D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony held in the cafeteria. It celebrated the end of a 10 week session in which Officer Wojciak, from the Bridgeview Police Department, came to speak to the students about important issues. These issues included law enforcement, alcohol abuse, substance/drug abuse, domestic violence, and the dangers of smoking and tobacco. Officer Wojciak designed lessons that included group discussions and interactive activities in which students learned how negative behaviors and habits can affect their mind and body. We hope that students NEVER forget the lessons that they learned during D.A.R.E. Congratulations 6th grade!

Girls Senior Trip to Egypt
April 2 , 2010

This year, six senior girls, three chaperones, Dr. and Mrs. Amine, Chairman of the Board, traveled to Egypt from March 19th to the 29th. They visited Cairo, Alexandria, Memphis, Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Aswan. On this trip, the students had the opportunity to learn much about Egyptian's pharaonic and Islamic History thanks to higly qualified tour guides provided in each city. Among the sites visited, the group went to Ibn Tulun Masjid, Hussein Masjid, Sultan Hassan Masjig in Cairo. They also went to Sala Al-Din Citadel and Mohamed Ali's mosque known as the Alabaster mosque. the group alsop visited the pyramids at Giza, the Karnak and Luxor temples, the Aswan Dam, a carpet school, and a traditional alabaster factory.

We would like to thank the chaperones Ms. Benameur, Mrs. Saleh, and Mrs. Ata for supervising the students duirng this trip. It was a satisfied and enriched experiencce for our senior girls this year.

Middle School Lexicon Challenge Competition
March 31 , 2010

On March 30th the Middle School Lexicon Challenge took place at Universal School. Students from 6th through 8th grade downloaded a list of a little over 200 words and studied each word's synonym and antonym. For the initial round, about 150 middle school students take a multiple choice test of 15 words. Then after scoring them, 10-13 qualifying students move on to the final round. During the final round, words are randomly chosen using the Lexicon Challenge software program. Students are tested orally for each word's synonym and antonym.

This year, we had four 6 th graders, four 7 th graders, and five 8 th graders compete in the final round! Congratulations to all the contestants!

Students studied their lists very well – in fact, in took much longer then we anticipated to get to our final three winners! We were so proud that all of them knew the words so well. Whereas the Spelling Bee focuses on the spelling of words, the Lexicon Challenge is unique in that students expand their vocabulary by learning the meaning of so many words. They can then use these words in their writing and even their oral language. As a result, their reading comprehension skills are strengthened. Even though the Lexicon Challenge is a once in a year event, its benefits last a lifetime…

The winners of this year's competition are:

1st Place: Myesha Tabriz
2nd Place: Ahsana Islam
3rd Place: Shereen Salama
